So this year sees the 25th anniversary since the release of A Tribe Called Quest‘s debut album People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm and as such, they will be rereleasing the album over this weekend (November 13th to be precise) including some new remixes from some more recent artists.

The first remix to be unveiled to the public was Pharrell Williams‘ remix of Bonita Applebum about a month ago. Now the original of Bonita Applebum is one of the greatest love songs in hip hop, so Pharrell had quite the task on his hands! I’d be lying if I said it was better than the original but, as they said over on OkayPlayer, it’s always interesting to see how the student will reinterpret the master’s original work, and this is no exception. Spacey synth lines, Pharrell’s signature low slung percussion and some classic bleepy laser sounds make this a really nice reimagining of the classic love song.

Second to be unveiled was the CeeLo Green remix of Footprints. CeeLo was quick to point out how much influence ATCQ had on him as a person; “How was it possible to be so varied, strange, unique, interesting and dope? Then “Can I Kick It” and “Bonita Applebum” guaranteed that a brave new world was upon us…I am me, by way of many things, and one them is A Tribe Called Quest.”

Lastly the J Cole remix of Can I Kick It? dropped a couple of days ago and Cole brought it right up to date. The signature Lou Reed sample is gone and replaced by some ethereal synth pads, a smooth yet bouncy bass riff and a beat that sounds like something straight out of Soulection.

So there you have it! Have a listen through and see what you reckon. Pre-order the re-isuue here.
